Experience and a 42 ft. yacht! I have the most experience at fishing in S.E. Alaska than any other charter captain in Juneau. I have fished for salmon and halibut in S.E. Alaska since 1972. I learned to fish while living in Hoonah from my Tlingit friends. They are the best and they taught me how, when, and where to catch fish. I fish for King salmon year round which gives me an edge over all of the other charter captains who put their boats away after the summer season is over. I commercial fished for halibut in the Gulf of Alaska and aboard a hi-liner salmon seine boat from 1974 -1975 & 1979 -1985 (was in the Army between those years & I am a veteran of 4 years with an honorable discharge). I have commercial trolled since 1972 aboard my own boat (still do!), and sport fished whenever I was not doing all of that! That is nearly 40 years of experience! If that is not enough, then let's talk about the 42 ft. Beartrack. She is the largest day charter fishing boat in Juneau and one of the safest, most reliable, and comfortable in the fleet. My web site is designed so that you can know me, my boat, and what I am all about before you get here. If you want to fish with the best and most experienced Captain aboard a safe, reliable 42 ft. motoryacht, then book your charter with me - that's why! Fish On! :-)
Yes! I take one crew member on all of my charters. I always attract the best crew and this year is no exception. I am welcoming a new crew member this year, Calen Young. Calen is a life long Alaskan, born and raised in Juneau. He has many years of fishing experience fishing with his family in the Juneau waters. Guess what Calen does on his days off in the summer - FISH! Just like me - we are both crazy about fishing which makes us a great pair! Calen will take good care of you while aboard the Beartack.
I arrange and deliver your fish for processing. They will fillet, pack, and ship your fish on a date that you choose so that your fish arrives after your trip. Processing fees are $1.50 per pound fresh and $3.00 per pound smoked.
There is no way to determine the cost from here. It depends on the weight of the fish, the distance to your house, etc. The best bet is for you to call your local Fed Ex office for shipping costs for overnight delivery from 99801 zip code. You should be able to get a good idea about what it will cost from them.
Yes! Deluxe ground transportation aboard a Ford Excursion is provided to and from all hotels, cruise ship docks, and B & Bs located in the downtown, Auke Bay, or valley areas. Pick-up from private residences, out the road, or Douglas Island may be arranged for a fee.
My Ford Excursion is silver colored and has the name: Beartrack Charters, a red stripe, and bear paw in the rear window. Since I will be your van driver and captain, I may be a little late depending on what I was doing prior to your pick up. It is possible that I am coming in from a charter and dropping people off prior to picking you up. Please be patient and remember that the people before you deserve my undivided attention and professional treatment, just as you do. Your charter time will start once you board the Beartrack.
Alcohol is allowed, but is limited to beer and wine. I have the final say on when someone should quit drinking. I will cut everyone off if it becomes a safety issue such as rough seas. Please drink responsibly especially aboard a boat where the effects of alcohol are increased.
Although my license and my boat can hold more people, I am limited by U.S. Coast Guard Regulations to 6 paying passengers at one time. This includes children and even babies. 6 people is a perfect number for my size boat which leaves plenty of room for everyone.
Yes, but all charters aboard the Beartrack are private charters. Only you and your party will be aboard the Beartrack. All rates are based on a 4 person rate with extra cost for the 5th and 6th person. Keep in mind that even if you are a party of 2, you are getting a 42 ft. yacht, captain, and crew all to yourself!
Yes, but there is a maximum of 6 people allowed aboard the Beartrack.
Go to the Online Booking link to see the available days and times. You can book directly online or call me on my AT&T Wireless Phone @ 907-723-2799. If I don't answer, please leave your name, cell or other phone number, and the date you want to go out. It also helps if you leave your time zone or city so that I don't call you too late or too early.
Yes, I have many friends in the charter business and am currently president of the Juneau Charter Boat Operator's Association, so I have plenty of contacts. When I arrange another boat, you pay that captain directly. Also, when you book more than one boat, we fish close together and make a fun time out of it, with boat competition, games, etc. We are also in contact by radio and keep updated with each others catch as the day goes along. It is a lot of fun when two or more boats go out together!
Since the Beartrack is a yacht, there is plenty of room both outside and in the heated cabin. Bring plenty of layers that you can take off and put on as the day progresses and the weather changes. I provide raincoats, but if you are going on a trip to Alaska, it is smart to bring your own. You don't need boots, but don't wear your best shoes either, especially if you are halibut fishing. Bring an extra pair of socks too in case your feet get wet.
Lunch is served on 8 hour charters. Lunch includes sandwich fixings that we set out for you to make your own, chips, and fruit (no bananas allowed!!.) Light snacks, coffee, soda, and bottled water are available during all charters.
I use top of the line Shakespeare rods and Penn Reels. You do not need to bring any gear or bait, although I have many people that have a secret lure they bring from home and we certainly can help you set that out to see how it works with Alaska fish.
There may be a fuel surcharge if fuel prices go over $3.50 per gallon. 2011 rates are based on fuel at or under $3.50 per gallon. Most localized charters will not be affected, but long trips such as halibut charters may include a fuel surcharge. The fuel surcharge will be calculated by taking the amount per gallon over $3.50 and multiply it by the estimated number of gallons to be used that day. (ie: Fuel goes to $4.00 per gallon. It is estimated we will use 100 gallons for halibut fishing. $0.50 x 100 = $50.00 fuel surcharge).
I will guarantee you this: I will give you my best effort and all of my years of experience to catch you fish! The fishing is awesome here and with good luck, everyone will catch fish. Fishing is fishing no matter where you go, and sometimes (not very often thank goodness) the fish just don't bite no matter what you do! My goal on each and every charter is to give you a good time whether the fish are biting or not. Don't forget that fishing charters here in Alaska are also sightseeing charters and we see whales, sea lions, seals, eagles, etc. on nearly every trip out.
